“Buddhist Himalayas and the Source of the Ganges”
September 15 - October 8
Highlights include:
Daramsala - Perched on the high slopes of the Himalayas, Dharamsals is the home of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Leh - Sometimes called little tibet, Leh is located deep in the Himalayas at an altitude of 11,500 feet. Dotted with numerous tibetan monestaries, it is one of the moste exotic cities in India.
Rishikesh - Situated on the Right Bank of the Ganges River and surrounded on three sides by the Himalayas, Rishikesh is known as the celestial abode. It is a mountain village famous for yogis, caves and ashrams.
Gangotri - Located high in the Himalayas at an altitude of nearly 10,000 feet, Gangotri is a charming mountain village which flanks the Ganges as it rushes out of the glacier, fourteen miles north. Gangotri is saturated with ashrams, and populated by sadus and spiritual seekers who have come to pay their respects to this sacred river and to Lord Siva. The Ganges, called “Mother Ganga”, is said to be the hair of Lord Siva.
Gaumuk - Fourteen miles above Gangotri, at an altitude of 13,000 feet, is Gaumuk, the actual site where the Ganges emerges from a huge glacier. Since there is no road from Gangotri to Gaumuk, trip participants will have the option of making the spectacular trek either on foot, by horse, or in a dholi, (a chair carried by four porters).
Meals - Daily breakfast and dinner included. Most diets can be accommodated.
Accomodations - Clean, comfortable, and in a couple of cases, luxurious hotels. We use the best accommodations available in the areas we visit. In the mountains, certain limitations are inevitable. In Gangotri, the accomodations will be clean, simple, basic rooms, with private bath rooms and western toilets. At the highest altitude, in Gaumuk, we will stay in large army tents, which have beds.
Special Requirements - None, the trip is open to any adventuresome, spiritually inclined person, and is designed to be comfortable, safe, and healthy. In the mountains, however, accomodations will not be luxurious and will require a the ability to adjust to more simple conditions and to sleep in a sleeping bag.
