Major Period of the Moon: October 1, 1998 - October 1, 2008

The Moon is placed in the constellation of Shatabhisha, a constellation which is connected with the power of healing. Venus Sub Period: August1, 2006 - March 31, 2008
Venus is a liberal planet, which is why the democrats have taken control of the congress. Venus is well placed in the seventh house in a conjunction with Jupiter, so this period may also give some support to the economy. This period may also bring a more prominent dialogue about creating change in the educational system. Venus is the planet of water, placed in Ardra, a wet nakshatra, so this could produce and increase of wet weather.
Sun Sub period: March 31, 2008 - September 30, 2008
The Sun is the ruler of the ninth house, placed in the 5th house from Venus. This period focuses on the elections. The Sun is the significator for the president and is well placed in the chart. In the Dashamsha chart, it is placed in Shravana Nakshatra, which is linked ot the story about Vamana, the dwarf avatar of Vishnu, who kicked the demons out of heaven and restored the gods to their rightful place. This period clearly reflecting a political battle between the "gods and the demons". In the story, the ruler who was presiding at the time of the struggle was the king of the demons, Bali. Since the Republicans are in power at this time, George Bush is represented by Bali. In the story, Vamana took three steps. With the first step he covered all of heaven. With the second step he covered the underworld and the middle world. With the third step there was nowhere left to step, so he put his foot on the head of Bali, pushed him into the underworld where he belonged, and restored the gods to the heavens where they belonged. This imagery seems to clearly symbolize the long travel (covering the entire universe) necessary to wage a political campaign. It suggest the overthrow of the incumbent president, which will happen in any case because his term in office is ending. But it also suggests a change of the ruling party, which favors the democrats.
The sun is placed in the 10th house from the Moon in the Dashamsha chart. This may stimulate foreign trade for the US during the period of the Sun.
In the Hora Chart, the Sun is placed in the second house with Jupiter, and receives an aspect from Saturn. This period may produce measured optimism regarding the economy and the value of the US dollar but obstructions and economic pressures will continue to be felt throughout the period. The economy will continue to grow at a slow pace in alternating ups and downs. Yet uncertainty and doubts will continue.
In the Ekadashamsh Chart, the Sun is debilitated in the 12th house. Huge economic expenditures will also continue (probably due to the war) furthering economic uncertainty. However, this period seems to relatively better for the economy (in general) than the Venus period (August 1, 2006 - March 31, 2008)
The ekadashamsha chart can also reflect military issues in the chart of a country. The Sun's debilitation here seems to amplify the public displeasure over the president's war policies and it may heighten the desire to make a change. The Sun is in Swati, however, which has the shakti "to scatter like the wind", suggesting the continued dispersion of resources due to the war.
In the Chaturtamsha Chart (real estate) the Sun is in the first house, at 0 degrees. Uncertainty in the real estate sector will continue to prevail. It's placement in the first house will bring the real estate situation to the forefront and some new attempts to stimulate the housing market may take place. However, the 0 degree placement suggests that these efforts may not be very effective.
USA Mars Period Sept 30, 2008 - September 30, 2015
In 2008, the United States will enter the period of Mars. This will be the second time in history that the USA will pass through this period. In the past, the Mars period took place between September of 1888 - September of 1895. There were several significant events and trends which took place during that period which might help in understanding the upcoming period to some extent.
First, it is important to remember some of the significations of Mars, the sign of its placement in the USA chart (Gemini), and the nakshatra of its placement (Punarvasu). Among other significations, Mars is related to warfare, business, industry, land and technology. Gemini is a sign of communications, and transportation. Mrigashira is a nakshatra related to roads and paths. The seventh house is related to politics, warfare, business, and banking. The following are some of the events and trends which may take place during the upcoming Mars period from September of 2008 - September of 2015. These predictions are given against the background of the historical events and trends which took place which took place during the previous Mars period from 1888-1895.

This may be a period of diplomatic problems, broken treaties or disagreements, especially over land. The USA may ignore human rights or even legal rights for isolated groups of people in its desire for land, or for natural resources which come from the earth such as oil.
On another level, there may be in increase in the sense of urgency about owning property on the part of the public. This may lead the government to institute certain policies designed to make owning a home easier for the poor.

Indian land grabbing - Starting in 1889 with the Oklahoma Sooners, Indian land was given for the taking in a public land grab which took less than 24 hours for thousands of white settlers to claim 2,000, 000 acres of Indian land in Oklahoma. This was repeated in the next few years in other states as well. Mars rules land. It also rules thieves and theft. It is placed in the seventh house (agreements) of the USA chart. In an individual horoscope, this placement causes the person to see other people as wrong and to become aggressive and argumentative. The economy may continue to struggle during this period. There may be a continued drain on resources due to military expenditures. The past Mars period fell within a longer period of economic depression called The Long wave Depression which took place between 1873 - 1897. On June 27th of 1893, during the sub period of Ketu, the Stock market crashed (called The Panic of 1893) sending the country into a deeper period of depression which lasted for 4 years. During the Mars period hundreds of banks as well as nearly a hundred railroads failed.
